Life in the UK Test
Applying for settlement or naturalisation in the country
If you aspire to apply for British citizenship or ’Indefinite Leave to Remain’, one of the essential eligibility requirements is passing the Life in the UK test. Also known as the British Citizenship test, it was introduced to ensure that new British citizens have a good understanding of British customs, traditions, laws, the political system, and the English language. After all, to move and live in a different country, it's crucial to know its history and culture.
You can only apply for naturalisation or settlement once you've cleared the Life in the UK test. With so much at stake, preparing for the test can be stressful, but thorough preparation is the most effective way to pass.
Important Points to Remember
- Booking the Test: You can book your Life in the UK Test online at least three days in advance. The test costs £50 and is non-refundable, even if you fail.
- Test Centres: There are over 30 test centres across the UK, making it convenient to find a location near you.
- Preparation Material: The official handbook for the Life in the UK Test is the best way to prepare for the test. It covers all the relevant information you'll need to know.
- Test Format: During the test, you will have 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple-choice questions about British traditions and customs on a computer.
- Passing Criteria: The pass percentage is 75%, which means you must correctly answer at least 18 questions to pass.
- Test Results: You can find out your result immediately after the test, and you will be issued either a pass or fail certificate.
- Required Documents: Remember to take proof of identity and address to the test centre.
- Time Allocation: Allow 2 hours to complete the entire process. This includes an identity check on arrival and the 45-minute test.
Exemptions from the Test
You need not appear for the test if you are under 18 or over 65. Additionally, if you have a long-term physical or mental condition, you can provide either a form or letter from a doctor confirming the condition, and you may be exempt from the test. Finally, if you've passed the test before as part of the ILR application, you don't need to retake it.
