Getting a driving licence in the UK

Getting a driving licence in the UK

Driving in the lane of success

ISo, you’re on the road to obtaining a driving license in the United Kingdom. As you brace yourself for this adventure, let us guide you through the process of acquiring that coveted permit.

Do note that while an Indian license holder can enjoy their Indian driving license for up to a year after entering the UK, a UK driving license is a necessary step to legally drive on UK roads when you’re planning to stay and drive beyond that mark.

  • Step 1: Apply for a provisional driving licence

    • This is your ticket to the world of four-wheeled adventures. You must have lived legally in the UK for 185 days to get a provisional driving licence. To apply, first hop onto the UK government's website and apply online or fill out a paper application form. To qualify, you need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old and meet the minimum eyesight requirements.
  • Step 2: Get ready for the theory test

    • You'll need to prove your mental agility in the theory test. In a nutshell, it includes a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception challenge. To conquer the multiple-choice section, read up on the UK Highway Code for all the road rules, signs, and regulations. As for the hazard perception test, you’ll need to hone your skills of observation and anticipation. There’s a range of online resources and apps to help you practice this.
  • Step 3: Buckle up with driving lessons

    • It's time to hit the road with a qualified driving instructor by your side. Make sure to practice outside of your lessons. So, get those lessons booked, rev up your motivation, and let the adventure begin.
  • Step 4: Gear up with a practical driving test

    • Now is when you put your driving skills to the test. You’ll have an examiner checking your driving and maneuvering on public roads. And, of course, demonstrating your mastery of safe driving practices. If you ace the test, you'll be handed a full driving license.
  • Step 5: Maintain that prized driving licence

    • If you’ve gotten that driving license, your on-road adventures can begin. Just keep those eyes on the road, follow the rules, and drive safely. More importantly, you will need to renew your license every 10 years to keep the good times rolling. And, if your personal information changes, make sure to update it.
    • As you bridge the cultural divide, some things invariably remain the same - like driving on the left side of the road. We wish you happy learnings and may your road be filled with friendly nods and unforgettable memories.
